Parenting and Child Discipline: Some Random Thoughts and Tips

Often times, it takes a great deal of trial and error to determine the best approach to parenting and child discipline. Unfortunately, a strategy that works well one time with a child may not work as well the next. Effective parenting is therefore more of an “art” than it is a “science.”
So, where is a parent to begin with regards to child discipline?

There are probably as many answers to that question as there are children…but let’s look at some common sense approaches to parenting and child discipline. The following parenting tips may seem “simple” or “basic,” but it’s important that they are highlighted for the purpose of this article.

1. Discipline should always be swift. Waiting too long to dole out consequences is ineffective and can be confusing to a younger child.

2. Discipline should be consistent. There’s nothing more confusing to a child than to be given consequences for a behavior one time…only to have that behavior ignored the next time.

3. The “authoritative” parenting style is the most fair and effective style of parenting. These parents incorporate a good balance of authority with a good balance of affiliation (closeness).

4. Discipline should never be used to induce fear or humiliation. Discipline should be done with the purpose of teaching and redirecting.

5. A confident parent is an effective parent. Children have an uncanny ability to know when a parent is willing and/or able to back up words with action.

6. Structured environments breed better behavior. Children thrive when routines, schedules, clear expectations, and such are put in place.

7. Spending quality time with your child is incredibly valuable. It helps to establish a close relationship and can do wonders for boosting your child’s self-esteem.

8. Parenting should be fun! Use little humor each day and try as best as you can to be playful and upbeat.

9. Instill a sense of responsibility in your child. There should be firm rules regarding chores, homework, and other household expectations.

So there you have it, 9 simple and effective parenting and child discipline tips. Obviously, this is not a complete list of parenting tips but it is certainly a good start. Hopefully, you will keep these tips in mind as you go about your daily parenting experiences!
