Sleepovers are exciting milestones for kids—nights filled with games, snacks, late-night laughter, and the thrill of independence. But along with the fun, it’s important for children to understand a few key rules that keep them safe, respectful, and responsible. Here are eight rules kids should follow when staying over at a friend’s house.
1. Always check in with your parents. Let your parents know when you arrive, what you’re doing, and if any plans change. A quick message or call shows responsibility and helps everyone feel comfortable.
2. Follow the house rules. Every family does things differently. Whether it’s taking off shoes inside, quiet hours, or electronics rules, respecting the household’s expectations is essential.
3. Be kind to younger siblings and polite to adults. Kids don’t have to be best friends with everyone in the house, but they should always be courteous, patient, and respectful.
4. Ask before eating or taking anything. Even if snacks seem available, it’s polite to ask first. Sleepovers are not the time to raid the pantry or explore without permission.
5. Stick with the group and avoid wandering off. Whether they’re in the backyard, at a park, or in the neighborhood, kids should stay where the supervising adults expect them to be.
6. Keep your phone use appropriate. No posting photos of others without permission, no late-night calls, and no messaging anything you wouldn’t want adults to see. Phones should support safety—not create problems.
7. Speak up if you’re uncomfortable. If something feels wrong, unsafe, or simply overwhelming, kids should feel empowered to step away, call home, or talk to an adult. Their instincts matter.
8. Clean up after yourself. Whether it’s bedding, dishes, or craft supplies, leaving a mess behind is disrespectful. Helping clean up shows appreciation for being invited.
When kids follow these rules, sleepovers become safe, positive experiences—ones filled with fun, friendship, and memories they’ll treasure for years.
